Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University is the only state university in Southeastern Bulgaria. It was founded on 6^th October 1963 by Decree № 162 of the Council of Ministers as the Higher Institute of Chemical Technology. Five years later, the Institute was renamed the Higher Institute of Chemical Technology "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov", which forever links it with the name of its patron. In 1995, by a decision of the National Assembly, it was established as “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” University.

Education at the University is carried out in five faculties - Faculty of Technical Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Public Health and Health Care and Faculty of Medicine. It comprises three colleges - the Technical College, the Medical College and the College of Tourism and two departments - the Department of Language Teaching and the Department of Qualification and Professional Development of Teaching Professionals (DQPDP).

Education at “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” University is carried out in 18 professional fields in 45 accredited Bachelor and over 30 Master programs.

The Central Research Laboratory and the Electronic Computing Centre occupy a worthy place in the structure of the University. Students studying at the University acquire the educational qualification degrees of "Professional Bachelor", "Bachelor" and "Master", as well as the scientific and educational degree "Doctor".

The University has over 320 highly qualified lecturers, 127 of whom are habilitated. The organization and management of the educational process at the University is in accordance with the European requirements and criteria for a quality educational and research process. The University system for evaluation and maintenance of the quality of education has been developed. In terms of the quality of scientific research the University is ranked among the first in Bulgaria according to the Hirsch system for contribution to science. In pursuance of the management's policy of rejuvenating and improving the qualifications of the academic staff, the practice of announcing competitions at all levels - from "assistant" to "professor" - has been established.

Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov University has modern necessary equipment, which is in accordance with the state requirements for high quality education. It consists of six academic buildings, a sports facility, three student hostels, three student canteens and a medical service centre. The bedding stock of the student hostels enables accommodation for all students who are not residents of Burgas.

The library and information complex includes the Central Library and three branches. The library and information complex provides materials from a wide range of fields of knowledge - social, economic, humanities and technical sciences. The reading rooms are equipped with 150 seats for reading. Access to the scientific databases Scopus, ScienceDirect, EmBase, Web of Knowledge is provided.

The academic management makes systematic efforts for the maintenance, expansion and effective use of the available necessary equipment, its modernization and renewal.

The University has established active scientific relations with institutes and universities from England, France, Germany, Russia, Romania, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Serbia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia, etc. They create opportunities for scientific specializations and teaching practice of lecturers and students, for exchange of lecturers, teaching and scientific literature.

The motto of the University ''Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov'' - Burgas is: "CONTINUITY, INNOVATION, GROWTH, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT".
