The University

 “Prof.Dr. Assen Zlatarov” University is the only autonomous state-funded higher educational establishment in South eastern Bulgaria. The University was founded in 1963 by Decree 162 of the Council of Ministers as Higher Chemical Technological Institute and was recognized as such by a resolution of the National Assembly of 1st August 1995. The University was institutionally accredited by Resolution No16 of 17th May 2007 by the National Assessment Agency of Republic of Bulgaria for the term of six years.

Students are trained in five faculties (Faculty of Technical Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Health and Health Care and Faculty of Medicine) and three colleges (Technical College, Medical College and College of Tourism) and obtain the degrees of professional bachelor, bachelor, master and PhD.

 The University campus is located on an area of 200 decares and comprises 6 buildings with more than 200 lecture rooms, over 70 laboratories and a training complex. The students can use all sports facilities, three hostels, a post office, and a medical care center. 

The College of Tourism is situated in the beautiful park Lake, 150 m from the beach and at 20 minutes walking distance from the centre of the town. The Medical College is in the centre of the town.

 How to reach the University

 By air

You can come to Sofia by air and from there by bus, by train, by plane or you can reach Burgas by a direct flight. The airport of Burgas is situated in Sarafovo, a neighborhood of Burgas, 10 kilometers from the centre of the town. It is the second largest airport of the country, after Sofia airport, and throughout the year planes from the country and abroad land and take off. The flight from Sofia to Burgas takes 40 minutes. You can catch bus -No15 from the airport which is near Burgas or a taxi. The University is located at the entrance of the town along the central road to Sofia.

 By train or by bus

From Sofia to Burgas you can travel by train or by bus. The trip takes 6-7 hours. Buses belonging to various transport companies are available at every hour and there are 4 trains to Burgas within 24 hours.

 Accommodation

 “Prof. Dr. Assen Zlatarov” University has 3 hostels for students which are located on the territory of the University. They can accommodate about 1200 people. Each room has its own bathroom and WC. the price for a bed in a double room is 100 levs (about 50 euro) a month. The electricity, water supply and heating are included in the price.

 On Arrival

When the Erasmus students arrive first they have to contact the inspector who can be found in hostel №2, room 202, to issue them an accommodation order and to pay the accommodation fee. The hostel keeper issues an accommodation form and an admission blank bearing the number of the hostel and the number of the room where the student is accommodated on the basis of this accommodation order. In case the students arrive on holidays or out of working time the key is given by the hostel keeper on the ground floor after having declared in advance the date of their arrival.

Having been accommodated, students should go through the following steps:

Step1: Visit the International Relations Office and submit the following:

  1. a) An official letter from the institution sending them, certifying the Erasmus status of the student for the designated period.
  2. b) Two photographs for the Registration and Student’s Record Book.

Step2: Address the Contact Person of the respective Department, whose name appears in the Bilateral Agreement or may address the Erasmus Program Coordinator of the Faculty.

Academic calendar

 The academic year consists of two semesters. In general, the autumn semester starts in the first half of October until end of January and the spring semester in the second half of February until the end of June. Examinations are held at the end of each semester for a period of about three weeks.
